FEDERAL

The Prime Minister shared the RCMP’s confirmation that 22 people were killed during the recent Nova Scotia tragedy; he extended his condolences to the victims’ friends and families

· The Prime Minister announced more significant financial support for students and other young Canadians struggling to find jobs during the pandemic, and those who have fallen through the cracks in receiving other emergency assistance – these measures will add up to approximately $9 billion dollars:

o Canada Emergency Student Benefit: $1,250/month from May to August; $1,750/month for those who are caregivers or have a disability

o Canada Summer Jobs Program: 76,000 jobs created within sectors or areas related to pandemic needing assistance

o Indigenous students: $75 million for First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation students pursuing post-secondary education

o Research and graduate students: $291 million to extend scholarships and grants (by 3-4 months)

o Canada Student Service Grants: $1K to $5K (depending on hours worked) for those volunteering in fight against COVID-19

o Doubling student grants for the 2020 school year

o Those who qualify: Post-secondary students in school now or attending in September 2020, December 2019 graduates, those employed but making up to $1,000/month

o Payments delivered through Canada Revenue Agency

PROVINCIAL

Overview – Premier Ford:

· We are in the midst of a raging battle against COVID-19 in long-term care homes, doing everything possible to support our most vulnerable

· Today, making a formal request to bring in federal reinforcements; includes resources from Public Health Agency of Canada and Canadian Forces Personnel

· Additional supports will be deployed to five priority homes for staffing relief to focus on care for residents

· Support from federal partners is small part of robust response to COVID-19 in long-term care homes

· Working with hospitals across the province to deploy additional staffing and infection prevention controls in long-term care homes:

o In Toronto alone, five hospitals (Michael Garron Hospital, Women’s College, North York General, Unity Health Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital) have been engaged to support approximately 40 long-term care homes in the city

o Other hospital partners and health partners have stepped up to help their local homes, including Trillium Health Partners, Halton Healthcare, Grand River, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and the Ottawa Hospital

o More than 70 volunteers, including registered nurses, social workers, administration and medical doctors have been recruited from the University Health Network to assist long-term care homes in the Greater Toronto Area

In York Region, as of April 22, at 5 p.m. there are:

1,250 confirmed cases 50 new cases since yesterday43 confirmed cases are currently hospitalized; 20 of which are in Intensive Care 73 cases among health care workers

· 65 total confirmed deaths

383 resolved cases, which equals about 31% 35 institutional outbreaks under COVID-19 protocols: 13 Long Term Care/Retirement Homes22 Community Care Settings
